I do not know what happened, but my computer just froze on me completely; it would take no input from any device. If there's any way to save that situation beyond a hard reboot, I don't know it.

The trouble, of course, was that I was working when it happened. My word processor has an autosave function meant to cut in at such times, but I don't entirely trust it after it lost some work for me a couple of weeks back. So I was sitting here staring at my precious page of words, worrying that it was doomed and wondering how to save it, whether I should write it out by hand just to be sure I had it before I rebooted - and then I thought don't be silly, Chaz, picked up my phone and took a picture of the onscreen page. E-mailed that to myself, rebooted, and hey presto. The autosave did work, but the last paragraph was missing because it was set on a three-minute saving cycle; I read that missing para from the photograph and retyped it (and of course reworked it, so it's better now), adjusted the autosave cycle to every minute, and hey presto.

So tell me, O internets: working in Linux as I do, is there a way to unfreeze a computer if it will take input from neither mouse nor keyboard? 'Cos that did shake me, a little bit. If I were geekier I'd probably be busy now diagnosing the problem and fixing it, but that's beyond my pay-grade, alas...
