I should probably be working on The Garden right now, but my study has been made over to Mike's usage for this fortnight, so I can't really settle to a session; and besides, this is yogi night and I am cooking. The curry's seething gently, the rice is done, the potatoes are done, the cucumbers are giving up their juices. The coals are heating on the grill. (That's not actually for dinner tonight, but I need to smoke the bacon.) It's 86 degrees F out there, and I am snatching a breather: which apparently means posting to my blog.

Mike has assured me that I should not allow his temporary insanity refusal to start drinking this early in the day to inhibit me in any way. That was the very word he used, "inhibit". I have assured him that I will not. *glug*

Mike's reading one of my Kipling books as we speak. As usual, he turns out to know more about Kipling than I do; and to have an approach I had not considered (unsurprisingly, it's musical/folky: apparently his old friend Peter Bellamy set a lot of Kipling's verse to music, and I should pursue this). One might resent being so much outclassed on one's own territory, were it not for the fact that it is utterly impossible to resent Mike. The reach of his interests and engagement is so broad and so gentle, it's just always a privilege to rub up against it. And always a pleasure simply to be in his company. Tl;dr: I love my smart friends.

In other news, there is none. I am off to the sties afresh.
