Taking a contented mid-morning Sunday stroll in Leazes Park, I walked past a long Georgian terrace of apartments, and someone inside was practising Mozart's horn concerto (K495) with the window open.

I was not the only person singing Michael Flanders' words to it, sotto voce as we passed.

Culture abides.

My sotto voce in those circumstances tends to be a little less sotto and rather more voce.

Atta voce! I sotto on account of not being able to hold a bloody note, let alone a tune. It's always seemed to me an act of great unkindness, that a joy of singing is so determinedly given to those who are utterly unable to use it.

Oh, let us for God's sake not waste altos on harping. It's such a lovely voice, and such a bloody tedious instrument. Please can we have oboes in heaven? And double basses. And pianos and saxophones - obvious, but there's a reason why things become a cliche - and clarinets, and absolutely no recorders, but certainly French horns, tho' I can live without the violins, and...
