I do understand about jobs, really I do. People have to have them, and if they want nice ones, sometimes they have to go elsewhere to find them. I get that.

I just hate the going-elsewhere element, when it means that my circle of nearby friends diminishes. It's been going on for years, by ones and twos; I have sat here and watched my world fray away.

You will gather that it's happening again. They broke the news to me this weekend, that two of my close friends are off, before the next academic year. Promotion, kudos, dosh, all of that good stuff. I begrudge none of it, of course: just the absence.

Hell-raising novelist tells all

It's half-five, which means it's time to crack open a bottle of wine and sit down to an hour or two of intensive writing-time.

I was just downstairs in pursuit of the party of the first part, and it struck me - right there, with my corkscrew in my hand - that I really didn't want to do either part of this, but most particularly that one. It's not the writing, it's the wine. What I really want to do is make a pot of white tea and sit in my chair and read a book.

Y'know? I think I might do that. Just for a bit.
