Does anyone know if Home Delivery Network aka Yodel even pretends to deliver on Saturdays? They haven't upgraded their tracking data since Thursday, when my package was said to be "in transit"; I'm wondering if I durst venture out, or if my absence will immediately occasion the only visit they are able to make in the next week. (And yes, I know this is magical thinking. I believe in magical thinking. It's all the magic I got, damn it...)

So. Things I have learned today include the fact that neither of the two stopcocks with which I am familiar affects the running of the outside tap. There may very well be a third, but I have no idea where to begin looking for it.

Which means that if I am to change the washer on that tap, I am going to do it wet. Wet and cold. I know this is possible, for I have seen it done; just, not in three feet of snow. Brr.

I am quailing a little, I confess. I have the tools, I have the knowledge; I have less than an hour's daylight left. If I'm going to do it today, I need to do it now.

Or I could just leave it till tomorrow. Or the next day.

Except that last night it was really getting to me, lying in bed listening to the sounds of water in the pipes. Mostly I listened to the cricket, but I could still hear the water underneath.

The good householder ought not to put things off. And I'm going to have to do it sometime; might as well be now as then.

Um.

[ETA: Damn. I was overconfident. I either lack the tools or the skillz: it's a manky old tap, and I can't shift the valve. Not with my cheap adjustable spanner, at any rate. Grr...]

I hope we're all learning things today. Me, I have just also learned that the potato method doesn't work on this tap: neither the polar nor the equatorial variation. Application of potato just results in ice-water spraying all over Chaz, and then the potato falls off.

In other news, I've had enough and I'm going to get drunk now.

[Oh - in other other news, I did eventually grumble at Amazon. Who have come back to tell me that they sent my book off via Yodel on the 27th ult, which I knew; that the last tracking information was on Dec 2nd, which I knew; and that they are now pursuing Yodel, and hope to get back to me within two working days. Which last is new, and I'm glad that I grumbled. So thank you to those of you who urged grumblage.] [Now, wine. Then gin. Then whisky. Cricket later. 317 - 2.]
