And I'm thinking of the space lander game that was on the uni of Bristol main frame back in the day.

A graphics version (with balloon) showed up on the "Arcade" game series a few years ago.

Actually what I was thinking of was the evil Empire scout-drone at the start of "The Empire Strikes Back" - the one that burns through the atmosphere and smashes down onto the planet, then wakes itself up and starts its wicked searching until Luke shoots it...
