Still here. Still pickin'. I just read an LJ-post with the subject line "I sum up", and I thought "Ha! Lolcat!" And then I thought, "Um, no, actually, Chaz, that's regular English. You read too many cat macros, sunshine."

Kinda looks like lolcat, though...

In other news: I found five extra pages in my book, brought about by a terrible miscalculation of pagination. (I was getting increasingly baffled, how there could be more pages left on my computer than there were on my desk, when one was a direct print-out of the other. Now I know.)

I have (marginally) more work than I knew. Sigh.

Still doin' it. Vaguely.

It's not regular English! It's Inigo English!

Isn't it? I don't know whose post you're talking about, but if I used that subject line, it'd be a Princess Bride reference.

If it is my post to which you refer, it was definitely referring to "Let me 'splain. No, there is too much." :P

It does look like Lolcat, though, from a certain angle. I suppose...

Yup. I just needed someone else to point it out to me, being very slow and having wandered off in totally the wrong direction altogether...

Which direction might that have been? :)

Language change is supposed to slow down a lot once you get writing, as the kids' language-creating urges are held in check by their need to be able to read grown-ups' books. But I think it may have gone wrong now, as today in an online game I had a message in newspeak that I couldn't translate into English.

It said "ah cream soz", which I later found means "I was not paying attention and now crave forgiveness for my inappropriate actions".

Presumably the current generation of young language-makers live in pictures, have no books, and lack contact with adults, so they're free to create language in what used to be the natural way for tribes to establish in-groups. It just feels odd that I can read the words of Shakespeare more easily than that of teenagers', or in many cases, of lolcat.

If language-use is meant to set solid somewhere between adolescence and adulthood, then it's definitely gone wrong. I was at a gig last year, taking questions afterwards, and a friend in the audience interrupted: "Chaz, you're speaking lolcat."

And I listened to myself retrospectively, and he was right. I was.

Halp?

Were your ears burning on Thursday night? Because I was talking about you to Brit spec fic authors, and lots of people seem to know you. :)

Hee. That was you, was it? (At your superfab FP gig, would it be?) It is true, everybody knows Chaz. But what on earth were you saying...?

I was just saying how lovely you are, and how I wished I could meet you in Real Life... I was talking LJ with Jaine Fenn (I didn't know her at all until Thurs night and I LOVE her!), and we agreed that your cat posts are brilliant. :) I might've mentioned you to Mark Chadbourn, too. And possibly David Devereux...

Cinders, you shall go to the Chaz! *scatters sparkles from his wand*

Dunno when, now Maxim has folded his tent and slithered away. Come to a con, damn it! One I'm at!

*thinks* Hmm - what are you doing Sat 28th Feb? That's Picocon (http://www.union.ic.ac.uk/scc/icsf/social/events/picocon/index.html), little one-day con in London. I might make that...

*sparkles like a vampire princess*

Bah! Maxim. *mutter mutter* Taking all our fun away. (Now I'm glad I used his name for an actually dead vampire in my anthology story... hehe.) But... ooh! Piocon. I haven't even clicked the link - I'm in if you are. Um... how much does it cost? *goes to check link*

It's a tenner to get in. For me, it's a long trainfare away, which is more significant; so I'm not promising, mind. But I went a couple of years back, and had fun (and came home with the seeds of a story, too)(which I must revise, soonest; it turned into a novella, and it's not been let out of the house yet...). I shall poke a few other people, and find out what they're up to...

Hmm... Or maybe it was someone else who talked about the cats... Ugh! I can't remember now! Not that I'd had a drink or two. *has shifty eyes*
