Okay, how's this for a scenario?

The Tories and the Lib Dems sign a pact, and Cameron moves into Downing St.

This really pisses off a significant proportion of the Lib Dem constituency, who don't believe that this is what they voted for.

Once the gloating's over, the govt has to impose its austerity measures, which penalise the poor at the same time as that Tory policy of tax-cuts for the rich goes through. This really pisses off a significant proportion of the floaters who voted Tory for any reason other than actual conviction.

The Lib Dems get their promised referendum on the Alternative Vote, which the Tories campaign against. Tories win the day - probably by underhand means and yellow-press tactics - thus really pissing off the rest of the Lib Dem constituency, who no longer believe that this is what they voted for.

After a couple of years, the difficulties of coalition explode into recrimination and betrayal, and the deal collapses.

Meanwhile, the Labour party in opposition has rediscovered its soul as a party of the left, and wins the consequent election in a landslide...

Well, hell. A guy can dream.
