I am already famous for my hopeless memory. If I'm building a dish of many components, it's standard for me to forget to add one or more; if I'm serving a banquet in someone else's house, I'll often forget a whole course. I've come almost to expect the slightly plaintive phone-call next day, "Chaz, what exactly are we supposed to do with the octopus...?"

Today, in my ongoing struggle with not-being-entirely-well, I thought chicken and noodle soup would be the thing for lunch. It all got a bit complicated in the kitchen, what with two pans and the soup-bowl all needing different things thrown in at different times. No surprise, then, that I forgot a couple of ingredients.

Have you figured out what they were yet?

Yup. The chicken, and the noodles.

Call me a heretic, but being sick is the reason humans invented canned chicken noodle soup. Open can, add water, make toast, share with the cat and eat. It's all I'm capable of when sick.

Hope you feel better soon.

You're a heretic. But thank you for the wishes. And all cats everywhere thank you too, for your very proper attitude to sharing. (Does yours share the toast too? Barry is a demon for baked goods of all sorts...)

The spell worked!

I made soup two days ago and, so far as I know, didn't come within a whisker of burning it.

I'm sorry I had to steal some of your cooking mojo, but I was getting tired of eating cold beans.

Oh, hey, was it you? Well, if you'd asked, if you'd just let me know you'd taken some, I'd have known not to get so complicated: what with the coriander root and leaf, the chilli, the garlic, the mushrooms, the broccoli, the fish sauce, the lime... Oh - actually, I think I forgot the lime as well. Sigh.

C'n I have my mojo back now, can I? We can share, y'know, we're in totally different timezones here. We can pass it back and forth...

Sure, but I'll need it again soon--I just had the last of the soup, which was wonderful. But it'll be tomorrow befoe I get out to the market for more stuff.

Ah, just help yourself. Now that I know we're sharing, I'll check to make sure it's there when needed. If not, I'll make a sandwich or take something out of the freezer.

So what did you put in the soup, apart from unburnedness?

So you have . . .some sort of herbal . . .consomme?

Nah, it was more complex than that: there was the chicken stock simmering on one hob with extra coriander-root and chilli and garlic; there was the soup-bowl, pre-loaded with coriander leaf and more chilli and spring onion; and then there were the mushrooms and the broccoli which were added to the stock, before the pre-cooked chicken and noodles should have gone in. So there was quite a lot going on flavour-wise, and quite a lot of substance already there - oh, and the beansprouts too (you see? I'm forgetting even some of what I remembered before...). Busy little soup, it was.

Well it sounds like a wonderful soup in its own right, that deserves a special name. Unfortunately all I can think of is "non-chicken and noodle soup" which is an "accentuate the negative" thing.

Get fully better soon!

PS - any chance of you making Eastercon this year. We're actually booked!

I am so dithering about this. I'm going to Alt:Fiction in Derby at the end of April, and I'm hoping/expecting to be frantically busy with a new book around then, and I can't really afford either the time or the money for two weekends away - but, on the other hand, EasterCon would be full of nice people, and it's in Chester which is nice in and of itself, and...

So I'm dithering...
